Profile

T.K. (Sandy) Warley came to the University of Guelph from England in 1970, serving as Chair of the Department of Agricultural Economics and later as the Director of the School of Agricultural Economics and Extension Education.

Madame Chancellor: It is with great pleasure that I present to you one of the University's most devoted supporters and this year's recipient of the Lincoln Alexander Medal of Distinguished Service, Thorald K. (Sandy) Warley.

This award honours individuals who have made significant contributions in areas that have substantially improved the academic life, character and governance of the University. Dr. Warley is a shining example of such an individual. His extraordinary commitment to education and the University of Guelph spans decades, and has significantly contributed to this institution's stellar reputation.

Upon his retirement from the department of agricultural economics in 1991, Dr. Warley became a member of the OAC Alumni Association, serving for the next 15 years as a volunteer member of the association's board, and as a member of its advisory committee. The OAC Alumni Foundation and the University of Guelph Alumni Association have also greatly benefited from his knowledge, experience and guidance.

Dr. Warley's steadfast support has been felt in many areas. He has offered input into strategic plans at both the University and College levels, enhanced communications with alumni, and stewarded endowments that fund student scholarships. He has been a confidante and advisor to University faculty and administrators who have benefited from his impeccable logic and thought processes, his efforts to stay informed and current on University affairs, and his caring and kind heart.

This university awarded him an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree in 2003 to recognize the pivotal role he has played in the growth of the university both while teaching and in the years afterward. His contributions have also been recognized with the Alumni Volunteer Award in 2005.

Dr. Warley is a visionary leader who gently and influentially delivers thoughtful analysis and whose input is valued in all of his volunteer activities. As one alumnus observed, "If everyone had a smidgeon of the commitment that Sandy has, the world would be a different place." Dr. Warley's exemplary service to the University of Guelph has enhanced this institution's life and character in countless ways, and we are proud to award him the 2008 Lincoln Alexander Medal of Distinguished Service.
